Autumn colours best for a decade

The fine displays of gold and red leaves are due to the recent weather with warm sunny days and cool nights bringing out pigments normally concealed by the green chlorophyll.

P1030108In fact experts at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh say this is the best display of  colour for a decade.

FYI The red pigments in maple and cherry tree leaves are caused by sugar being turned into anthocyanin, which gives tomatoes and strawberries their colour.P1030104
