What happened to C&A?

P1000986Younger readers might not remember C&A because they closed down in the UK in 2001 having set up here in 1922 selling budget clothing.

They are still found in 20 countries across Europe including France and Germany (where I saw this one), Czech Republic, and even Russia and Turkey.

The name comes from the founding brothers Clemens and August Brenninkmeijer who established the company in the Netherlands in 1841.

Although forced off the UK high streets by competition from cheaper shops like Matalan they have thrived elsewhere despite fierce competition and have improved their quality to compete.

They also now have a C&A bank in Germany and the singer Beyoncé launched a fashion line for them in 2010.

The Brenninkmeijer family is the wealthiest in the Netherlands although the company now has its HQ in Zug, Switzerland (like Boots) for tax reasons.
