Reasoning is just as important as the traditional 3 Rs according to philosophy teacher Peter Worley. He spends one session a week with primary school children in London.
The story in the Times (20 July 2011) describes his session with Year 3 pupils and his enthusiasm for encouraging the children to think more critically about things.
Psychologists at Dundee University suggest that philosophy sessions in primary schools can improve problem-solving, communication skills and confidence and can also raise IQ levels.
At a time when schools in America are abandoning the traditional 3 Rs this is a forward thinking move by the headteacher Debbie Tompkins.
